What powertrain gives the DB12 this incredible speed?
This new Aston Martin makes use of a 4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine from AMG. This engine is the same one found in the DB11, but it’s been modified with larger turbos, an improved compression ratio, and modified cam profiles. These changes deliver the horsepower along with 590 lb-ft of torque. These power numbers are increased by 34 and 18 percent, respectively.
Although the V8 engine is more than powerful enough for an incredible drive, but Aston fans might lament the loss of a V12 engine for this car.
Power for the DB12 is sent to the rear wheels through a ZF 8-speed automatic transmission. This transmission has been reprogrammed in the DB12 to improve response times and shorten the shifts.
Is this new Aston Martin structurally better than the DB11?
The Aston Martin team found some areas where the build of the DB12 could be improved upon when compared to the outgoing DB11. The bonded-aluminum body structure is seven-percent stiffer than the outgoing model. The front tower has an increased stiffness of 140 percent, which improves the on-center feel of the steering system. This system is good enough only requires 2.4 turns of the wheel to go from lock to lock, which is much shorter than most cars.
The DB12 rides on a slightly wider track, but the biggest change in the suspension is found in the new Bilstein DTX adaptive shocks. The stiffer build allows these shocks to have four times the operating range of the DB11.
Its not all about performance
