Ram 1500 TRX vs Jeep Gladiator: Off-Road Pickups Go Hood To Hood

Before you head to your Ram dealer to take a look at the latest Ram 1500 TRX, consider whether the larger truck is right for you.

When it comes to off-road-ready trucks, the Jeep Gladiator is also a strong contender. However, there are some large differences between the two trucks, so let’s break it down.

Pure Power With the TRX

The Ram 1500 TRX didn’t hit the market until the 2021 model year, so even used models will be packed with modern technology and most of the latest features. Even before the TRX, the Ram 1500 has gained a reputation for its comfortable and luxurious cabin. The TRX doesn’t disappoint in this area and it has tons of creature comforts.

However, this comparison is about the TRX as an off-road pickup vs one of the most capable off-road vehicles available. The TRX easily delivers plenty of pure power with a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 that makes 702 horsepower and 650 pound-feet of torque. This is the Hellcat engine, but it’s also rated to tow up to 8,100 pounds with a max payload of 1,310. Again, these specs have stayed the same through each model year.

Trail-Rated Ability With the Gladiator

Compared to the Ram 1500 TRX, the Jeep Gladiator is a different kind of truck. It won’t be for everybody. It’s essentially the four-door Jeep Wrangler with a pickup bed. As such, it has pretty much the exact same off-road ability as the Wrangler. Even the most oblivious car buyer is likely aware that the Wrangler is one of the most capable off-road vehicles you can buy.

The Jeep Gladiator has a few advantages compared to the Ram 1500 TRX. It’s more maneuverable as a smaller truck, it can tackle the toughest trails right off the lot, and you can remove the doors, roof, and windshield. But the Gladiator’s power falls far short of the TRX. It’s rated to tow up to 7,600 pounds, but the most horsepower it generates is 285. You won’t be beating anyone on the flat with those numbers. The Gladiator’s cabin is also not as nice as the TRX and its road manners leave something to be desired.

TRX vs Gladiator: Which Should You Choose?

So now you’re probably really ready to head to your Ram dealer and get a TRX, but wait, it’s important to consider exactly what you want in an off-road pickup. The Jeep Gladiator is the more capable truck when it comes to tackling tough off-road trails and obstacles. However, it’s less civilized on the road than the Ram 1500 TRX and its cabin isn’t nearly as nice.

The Ram 1500 TRX is obviously the truck to choose if you need more towing ability. Its powerful V8 is great for off-road situations that don’t involve climbing over obstacles. Compared to the Gladiator, it’s more civilized on the road, but it’s also less maneuverable than the Gladiator since it’s a full-size truck.

In other words, choose the Gladiator if a Jeep Wrangler with a truck bed appeals to you. Otherwise, head for your Ram dealer and get the Ram 1500 TRX for more towing power and a comfortable ride.
