2021 was an incredible year for the automotive world. The return of the Ford Bronco caught the world by storm, and many expected it to be one of the highest-selling SUVs on the market. Contrary to that belief, the Jeep Wrangler actually holds the crown. That’s right; the flagship Jeep Wrangler outsold both the full-size Bronco and fun-size Bronco sport last year.
Apples to Apples
When making sales comparisons, the comparison must be equal. For example, the Bronco wasn’t fully available for sale until the second half of 2021. It would be completely unfair to compare a full year of sales versus only half a year of another.
The data shows that the Bronco sold just over 35,000 units in 2021. The Bronco Sport was purchased about 108,000 times. Together, you have a total of just over 143,000 Broncos under contract. On the other hand, the Jeep Wrangler sold a whopping 86,000 units during the same time period. With over 204,000 Wranglers sold in 2021 was the best year for this Jeep since 2018.
Which Jeep Wrangler Is Pulling Its Weight?
Part of Jeep’s success last year is due to a couple of new or updated models that hit the road last year. The 4xe was a crowd favorite and is expected to continue to top the charts in the coming years.
The 4xe is Jeep’s new off-roading plug-in hybrid. To alleviate any confusion, this Wrangler is supposed to be pronounced “four-by-E (electric).” This beast’s hybrid powertrain offers 375 hp and 470 lb0ft of torque. Before the hybrid engine kicks in, drivers can enjoy up to 21 miles of pure electric driving.
The other top seller is the Wrangler Rubicon 392. This model is named for the 22-mile off-road trail in Northern California. The 392 version takes the standard Rubicon model to an entirely new level. It comes with a Herculean 6.4-liter V8 engine that offers 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque. This V8 is easily the most powerful Wrangler out there, and it’s only available on the 392.
The Jeep Wrangler Rubicon 392 is the ultimate in off-roading. It comes with Fox shock absorbers, a two-inch lift, unique styling, and more. The 392 version of the Wrangler put eyes back on this top-of-the-line model.
Ford’s Uphill Battle
Just because the Jeep Wrangler had a spectacular year doesn’t mean that the Bronco is dead in the water. The release of a new vehicle is challenging when facing things like computer chip shortages, supply-line delays, and shoppers being a little hesitant to go out in public.
The Bronco is certainly going to pick up speed as Ford gets production lines back into full swing. The initial reservations and orders for the Bronco were pretty impressive. Now that it’s out on the road, it’s sure to gain some more attention.
Even if the Bronco gains some ground in the coming years, the Jeep Wrangler is going to continue to be a contender for high sales, especially with all of the new models and upgrades that are coming out way.
