New Porsche 911 Carrera GTS: Europe Outshines US Version

Why do we keep doing this? The new Porsche 911 Carrera GTS, a hybrid version of this incredible sports car, isn’t as good in the US as in other countries.

Unfortunately, government regulations have watered down another great car for North American driving. The version of this Porsche 911 that makes its way to the United States will be less aerodynamic in an effort to be slightly safer than in other countries. Is this a car that should be made safer in the US than in other countries? Unfortunately, we don’t get a say in that at all.

How is this Porsche less aerodynamic here than in Europe?

The new 911 Carrera GTS Coupe has a drag coefficient in Europe of 0.27. In the United States, this figure is 0.29. We don’t have an Eco mode setting for the rear spoiler because it has to be made to allow the brake lights to be more visible. That darn middle brake light that has become standard in the United States keeps us from enjoying the pure aerodynamic qualities of this incredible Porsche that Europe will get to enjoy. That small factor shouldn’t be too much of an issue for most buyers, but it could be for some.

Relax, the difference isn’t extreme

The slight difference in drag might not be noticeable in most cases, but it does make a difference when you look at the efficiency of the car. This means the Porsche 911 Carrera GTS in the US will be slightly less efficient than the models in Europe. This change is the same difference between the Porsche Taycan Turbo and Tesla Model S. It’s also the difference between the Mercedes-Benz EQS and Porsche Taycan Turbo, with the Merc being the most aerodynamic of the three with a drag coefficient of 0.20.

It will change things for EVs

The slight difference in drag between the 911 in the United States and in Europe isn’t enough to matter much, but it is enough to change the overall fuel mileage of the two cars. This change is enough to alter the electric driving range of some EVs.

For the venerable Porsche, the Eco Mode spoiler setting wasn’t available in the US or the previous generation model, which means most drivers won’t notice a change unless they visit Europe and drive the models there. Still, the slight change in drag might not be noticeable for even the most experienced drivers when they take this car to the track.
