Ram is Taking the Learning Position in the Electric Truck Race

The Ram approach to the electric truck market has a “wait and see” quality, with the new electric pickup arriving for the 2024 model year.

Sometimes, the best way to understand the right vehicle to build is to sit back and watch the mistakes of others. Some of the other models enter the market this year, another will arrive during the same year as the Ram EV, and others will likely fall somewhere between them. As these new electric pickups come into the market, a new race has begun; the one to dominate a new area of the auto market.

Why are Trucks Going Electric?

It wasn’t long ago that electric cars seemed more like a novelty than anything that could last. Today, we see plans for almost every automaker to evolve toward these electric models, including trucks. There wasn’t much push for this until Tesla revealed they had a car in the works that could pull, carry, push, and drive like every other truck. This Tesla truck doesn’t look anything like a traditional model, but that doesn’t stop us from admiring it. With proof electricity is helpful for truck stuff, the market is moving toward these vehicles.

When is the Ram EV Scheduled to Arrive?

The new Ram electric truck should enter the market in 2024 to give us another entry in this arena. Without much information, we know this brand is opening the RamRevolution.com page to allow potential customers to watch this new truck as it moves through the development phase. This website should undoubtedly add to the interest this truck gains. This new Ram arrives during the same model year as the new Chevy Silverado EV, giving us a pair of electric trucks from brands we know and admire.

Will Ram and Chevy Fall Behind Ford?

The Detroit Big Three in the truck world is Ford, Ram, and Chevrolet. GMC can be put together with Chevy or called the GM pair, but you get the idea. Ford has their new F-150 Lightning ready to go as a late-2022 model year offering that’s on the way to dealers already. This truck has a two-year head start on the other two. We see other electric trucks, either in the market or on the way, are the Tesla Cybertruck and Rivian R1T. Both of these electric models have unique issues.

What Issues Face the Tesla Cybertruck?

As interesting as the shape of the new Tesla Cybertruck is, this doesn’t look like a truck that will be used at job sites anytime soon. The stainless-steel body, sharp angles, and odd rear shape show us a truck that might be more of a toy for the well-heeled than an actual work truck. The starting price of $40,000 certainly puts this truck in line to be a truck you could use during your workday, but that isn’t where this truck is headed. No matter where you want to use this truck, the problem is continued production delays, which seems pretty typical of Tesla.

What Issues Face the Rivian R1T?

The Rivian R1T is an excellent electric truck for adventures, and it might be one of the leading models in the market. Unlike the upcoming full-size Ram electric truck, this truck is a midsize model. The R1T is priced too high to compete with the Detroit Big Three. It also comes from an unproven entity. Rivian doesn’t have the track record for trust in the truck world, and with a starting price that’s more than $70,000, this isn’t the truck you want to use during your regular day at the construction site.

Is the New Chevy Silverado EV Too Futuristic?

GM continues the development of the Chevrolet Silverado EV scheduled to arrive for the 2024 model year. This truck has a short bed, but that bed expands using the midgate feature, which folds the rear window and wall down to use the interior of the cab for materials you need to carry. This truck resembles the former Avalanche and could be mired with disdain because of that fact. Thankfully, the WT model arrives at a price point that puts it in direct competition with the base model of the Ford F-150 Lightning.

What Do We Know About the New Electric Ram?

The Ram EV is an electric truck that we know only a little about. A recent teaser video appeared on Twitter to make potential customers begin to drool over this truck. We know it will use an all-new STLA Frame platform, the fifth of the EV platforms expected from the Stellantis family. This new platform should offer a driving range of 500 miles and a battery pack set to provide between 159 and 200 kWh of power for the drive.

Is the Slow Approach Going to Win the Race?

Some of the responders on Twitter ask that Ram ensure this new truck looks like a traditional truck. This is a necessary request considering what we see already. The Rivian R1T is futuristic, the Tesla Cybertruck doesn’t look anything like a truck at all, the Ford F-150 Lightning might look the most like an actual truck, and the Chevy Silverado EV continues with the style we’ve seen it will resemble the Avalanche. We know this new Ram should have a sloped hood and windshield to give it a raked-back design.

Are You Waiting for the Ram Electric Truck?

Do you have a reservation set for the Tesla Cybertruck but don’t think you’ll get your truck before the new Ram EV arrives? Are you tired of seeing these new electric models offering a style that looks nothing like a traditional truck? Would you like your electric truck to be a body-on-frame build? You’ll likely want to drive the new Ram EV when it arrives. It won’t be long before all of the trucks and vehicles in the market are powered only by electricity. Will you be among the first to enjoy what Ram brings to the market?
