Which Ford SUV is Right for You

The two smallest of the Ford SUVs can offer you the right size and the quality you’re looking for when you take a drive. It’s no secret that we’re leaning more and more toward SUVs than toward sedans and cars today. Ford had a large lineup of SUVs, but if you’re moving up from a compact or midsize sedan, you might be most comfortable driving a compact crossover SUV. The Ford EcoSport is the smallest and the Escape is just above it to offer you the drive and the qualities you want on the road. Let’s take a look at these two Fords together.

Powertrains

Tow engines find their way to the lineup of the Ford EcoSport. You can choose a 1.0-liter three-cylinder model that gives you 123 horsepower or a 2.0-liter model that offers 166 ponies. Both of these engines mate to a six-speed automatic transmission. Choose the Ford Escape and you find three engine options starting with a 1.5-liter three-cylinder engine making 180 horsepower, followed by a 2.0-liter engine making 250 horsepower, and then a 2.5-liter model that offers 200 ponies. You’ll also find a hybrid powertrain in the Escape to give you the drive and power you want to enjoy.

Fuel Mileage

The smaller engine for the Ford EcoSport makes 27 city/29 hwy mpg while the larger one makes 23 city/29 hwy mpg. The Ford Escape has new powertrains which haven’t been fully tested yet, but the 1.5-liter engine has been tested and it bests the EcoSport. This powertrain reaches 27 city/33 hwy mpg in FWD models and has the option of AWD to give you the drive you’re looking for. You would expect the EcoSport to be the leader in fuel mileage, but the fact is the Escape is a bit better.

Cabin Size

Step inside the cabin of the Ford EcoSport and you’ll have 39.6 inches of legroom in the front and 36.7 inches in the rear. The headroom is 42.9 inches in the front and 37.5 inches in the rear seats. Move into the Ford Escape and you see 40 inches of headroom in the front while the rear-seat passengers have 39.3 inches of headroom. The legroom is listed at 42.4 inches for the front and 40.7 inches for the rear seats to give you the room you’re looking for. As you expected, the larger Ford has more room inside.

Cargo Carrying

Choose the Ford EcoSport and you find 20.9 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats with 50 cubic feet when you fold the seats down. You can tow up to 1,400 pounds with the smaller engine and 2,000 pounds with the larger power plant under the hood. The Ford Escape has an adjustable rear seat to give you up to 35.5 cubic feet of cargo room which will be much more when you choose to fold the seats down. The Escape can tow more than the EcoSport, which makes it the leader in this category.

Technology

You’ll find an excellent selection of technology in the Ford EcoSport. This model has the FordPass Connect with a Wi-Fi hotspot as part of the standard package. You’ll enjoy an eight-inch screen to give you the connection you want when you select the SE trim or above. The Ford Escape is now offered with the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite of safety items as part of the standard equipment for you to enjoy. The eight-inch touchscreen gives you the connectivity you desire and you’ll find a 12.3-inch digital instrument display to give you the readings you want when you take a drive.

The Right Choice

If you’re actually comparing these two Ford SUVs and trying to decide which one you should take out and enjoy on the road, the Ford Escape wins in every way. The Ford EcoSport might be a little cheaper in price, but you’re giving up a lot to get a little. Let the Ford Escape be the SUV you love to take for a drive and enjoy when you’re ready to have the compact crossover SUV that brings you the quality and features you want to enjoy when you take a drive.
