The Blasphemy of the Automotive World

For many of us we realize the automotive world is never going to stop changing at all. The fact that we’ve seen more changes in the past decade than at any other time in history is proof of this. There have been trends we loved and knew would work and we have had trends that seemed like the worst idea at the time. These are the blasphemous trends in the automotive industry that we’ve enjoyed for much longer now than we thought they would last. Let’s take a look at a few and see what we now have that we wouldn’t have had if automakers hadn’t take a chance at being the blasphemous laughingstock of the industry.

SUVs from Sports Car Brands – Blame Porsche, they started this trend with the Cayenne in 2002 and never looked back. The original though was the brand would eventually go under because they had sold out and changed their own dynamic. That hasn’t been the case at all and now Porsche also makes the Macan. Other sports car brands have also gotten in on the action and built their own SUVs. These brands include Aston Martin, Alfa Romeo, Jaguar, Maserati, Bentley, Rolls-Royce and Lamborghini.

Hybrid/Electric Sports Cars – Let’s see, the Tesla Model S, the Porsche 918 and the Ferrari LaFerrari have all proved that hybrid power isn’t just for the boring and slow that are looking for great fuel mileage. Another impressive car that has the power of both a gasoline engine and a hybrid motor is the McLaren P1 which is one of the most dynamic cars on the road and track. Since some of these cars have come into existence we’ve seen a huge influx of performance oriented hybrid/electric supercars that give us the imaginative way of driving that we want to experience for ourselves.

AWD and Turbocharged Muscle Cars – When technology meets up with a need to have improvements you see muscle cars that are finally embracing the need to enjoy the control of AWD and turbocharging. The traditional plight of only naturally aspirated engines has finally given way to the fact that turbochargers, superchargers and AWD are a necessity to keep up and be quick on the road and at the track. Without these added items to the muscle cars the Camaro, Mustang and Challenger might become obsolete, thankfully this is a trend that has caught on and is giving us more to enjoy from our muscle cars than ever before.

Automatic Transmission High Performance Cars – There was a time, and it wasn’t that long ago, when the only way to get high performance was with a manual transmission. Today the dynamic tuning and technology offered in nearly every performance car means we have at least one model that offers an automatic transmission for us to enjoy. These automatics are better at shifting and delivering the performance we need than we are and have surpassed human reaction times. Sorry driving purists, the performance automatics are here to stay.

Coupe SUVs – There are still some people who don’t like coupe style SUVs or four-door coupes, but this look gives vehicles a unique, stylish and impressive performance look that can be admired. Right now BMW and Mercedes-Benz both have coupe SUVs and four-door coupes in their lineup with other brands ready to follow. The style and grace these vehicles bring to the market make them a fixture that we won’t soon be able to get rid of and certainly don’t want to either. There may be some trade-offs for these vehicles, but the look and feel of them makes this trade worth it.
